Who Needs VATS Procedure?

  • Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia, and other lung diseases.
  • Sufferers of early-stage lung cancer (Stages 1 and 2).
  • Patients with tumors present in the chest cavity.
  • Resolve pulmonary nodules.
  • Patients with hyperhidrosis, oesophageal lung cancer, and hiatal hernia.
  • When the patient needs a pacemaker lead placement or mitral valve repair.
  • Rare scenarios where stage 4 lung cancer crosses with fluid accumulation in the lungs.

Types of VAT Surgical Procedures

  1. VATS Biopsy: The VATS biopsy technique is used to identify infections like tuberculosis (TB) and tissues surrounding the lungs (mesothelioma) by excavating a small amount of lung tissue to diagnose or confirm cancer in the thoracic region, typically for lung cancer or lymph nodes in the chest.
  2. VATS Drainage and Decortication: This procedure drains the bodily fluid from the lung cavity and aids in the compressed lung expansion.
  3. VATS Lobectomy: The most common treatment option for lung cancer and other thoracic conditions.
  4. VATS Wedge Resection: During this procedure, a little, wedge-shaped section of the lung is excised by the surgeon to diagnose the underlying cause of lung nodule formation and manage cancer that travels from other body parts.
  5. VATS Bullectomy: This procedure removes the tiny air sacs in the lungs that are damaged and cause air leaks within the body or lung compression.
  6. VATS Thymectomy: When paired with the VATS technique, this treatment uses keyhole incisions, making it simple to remove the entire thymus gland that is located beneath the breastbone.

How are VATS performed?

VATS employs an HD camera with a 2.5X magnification and sophisticated surgical instruments, such as a thin and long tube with a small camera on top, known as a ‘thoracoscope’, to provide the cardiothoracic surgeon with improved visibility and precision. This procedure involves a cardiothoracic surgeon making at least three small 5–10 mm cuts (keyhole incisions) on the side of the chest, using an HD camera and specialized keyhole instruments to remove the affected parts of the lung. This excision step involves using a retrieval bag (Endobag) inserted through one of the keyhole incisions.
