Benign fibroids, also known as uterine fibroids or leiomyomas, are noncancerous growths that develop in the uterus. They are quite common, especially in women of reproductive age.
Surgical removal of benign fibroids, also known as myomectomy, is a treatment procedure performed to remove noncancerous growths called fibroids from the uterus. The procedure can be performed through various techniques, including laparoscopic myomectomy (minimally invasive surgery using small incisions and a camera) or abdominal myomectomy (open surgery through a larger incision). The surgeon carefully removes the fibroids while preserving the healthy surrounding tissue.
After the procedure, patients may experience some pain or discomfort, which can be managed with pain medications. It is common to have vaginal bleeding or discharge for a few weeks. Recovery time typically ranges from a few days to several weeks, depending on the extent of the surgery and the individual’s healing process.
