Cancerous tumours can form when cells in any part of the body proliferate and multiply abnormally. Leukemias are cancers that begin in cells that would typically differentiate into various blood cell types. Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is a leukaemia that grows rapidly in myeloid cells.
Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for AML, in which anti-cancer medications are injected into a vein under the skin or into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), or chemicals are taken orally to kill or control cancer cells. Along with chemotherapy, targeted therapy or other treatment techniques are sometimes used.
The duration of the treatment may be between six and twelve months. With each chemotherapy session, the patient steadily improves. People with AML who do not relapse after 5 years are often cured. People with AML who relapsed but then went into a second 5-year remission are likely to be cured.
