Total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure that replaces an injured or worn-out knee joint with an artificial joint known as a prosthesis. This surgery is recommended for patients with severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
TKR is a major procedure that is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes about 1 to 2 hours. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision over the knee, removes diseased and damaged bone and cartilage while leaving healthy bone intact, and places the implants. As with any surgery, there are risks associated with TKR, including blood clots, nerve damage, and an increased risk of infection.
Physical therapy is recommended following surgery to help the patient regain strength and mobility in the replaced knee joint. Pain relievers may also be prescribed to help with any discomfort experienced during the recovery process. With proper care and rehabilitation, most patients can resume their normal activities within a few months.
