YStomach carcinoma, also known as gastric cancer or stomach cancer, is a type of cancer that develops in the stomach lining. The exact causes are not fully understood, but factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection, a diet high in processed foods, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and a family history of stomach cancer can increase the risk. Symptoms include persistent abdominal pain, indigestion, loss of appetite, unintentional weight loss, nausea and vomiting, fatigue and weakness, changes in bowel habits, and blood in the stool. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of tests, including endoscopy, biopsy, blood tests, and imaging tests like CT scans or MRI scans.
Stomach cancer treatment varies based on the stage, the patient’s health, and the specific type of cancer. Common surgical procedures include gastrectomy and esophagectomy. Apart from these, chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells, either before or after surgery. Radiation therapy uses high-energy rays to kill cancer cells, either alone or in combination with chemotherapy. Targeted therapy drugs attack specific molecules involved in cancer cell growth and survival. Immunotherapy helps the body’s immune system fight cancer.
