Severe pneumonia is a serious infection of the lungs that is characterized by inflammation and fluid accumulation in the small air sacs (alveoli) of the lungs. The symptoms of severe pneumonia can include high fever, chills, cough with phlegm, chest pain, difficulty breathing, and fatigue.

ARDS is a type of inflammatory lung issue in which the fluid-filled alveoli make less space for air, resulting in hypoxemia and dangerously low blood oxygen levels. The brain, heart, kidneys, and stomach are all affected by oxygen deprivation, which can have severe consequences and could be fatal.

ARDS is diagnosed with tests such as chest x-rays, blood tests, echocardiograms, and CT scans.

Doctors treat ARDS by addressing the disease’s underlying cause. The patient is placed in intensive care (ICU). Mechanical ventilation or a well fitted face mask may be utilised to assist the patient in breathing. Sedation is used to reduce pain, while blood thinners are used to prevent clots. Stress-induced stomach ulcers are minimised.

Each patient’s ARDS recovery may differ depending on the severity of the illness. While some people recover completely, others may have chronic lung problems and post-intensive care syndrome, which involves physical deterioration, anxiety, and despair. These can be treated with prescription drugs.
