    What is Digital Mammography?

A mammography test, also known as a mastography, is a standard practice for assessing the human breast for screening and diagnosis using low-energy X-rays. It is intended to help detect breast cancer early on and is employed in identifying any breast lump, distinctive mass, or microcalcification.

In conventional mammography, the findings of the breast tissue analysis are captured on film. Modern technology, digital mammography, which incorporates a solid-state detector, records the data by transmitting electronic signals to a computer and storing it for later use.

Yashoda Institute of Radiology and Imaging combines state-of-the-art radio-imaging equipment with knowledgeable radiologists and technicians to provide patients and referring physicians with a comprehensive evaluation of suspected illnesses or abnormalities. Digital mammography (tomosynthesis) coupled with 3D technology allows oncologists and gynecologists to evaluate for tumors (and cancer) and also guide biopsies.

    Who needs digital mammography?

    • Women with symptomatic changes in the breast tissue, such as redness, itching, swelling, or abnormal masses.
    • A screening mammography is necessary for asymptomatic elderly women to rule out cancers early.
    • Women who had breast cancer in the past.
    • Those women who are at risk for breast cancer because of hereditary factors.

How is a digital mammography done?

Your breast is placed on a flat supporting plate for the mammogram, and your technician uses a parallel plate known as the paddle to compress the breast tissue. The compressed breast tissue on the X-ray machine’s supporting plate is then exposed to the low-radiation X-rays. Finally, digital images known as mamograms are created when the machine’s X-ray patterns are sent to a detector on the opposite side that is connected to a computer.

Rapid, high-precision features of mammography aid in producing high-resolution images of breast tissue, enabling the early detection of any breast-related diseases or tumors.
