Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy is a needle biopsy procedure to detect the presence of cancer cells in the prostate gland. A special biopsy needle is inserted in the prostate gland through the walls of the rectum to remove small tissue samples for lab analysis. The surgeon removes these samples from the prostate gland using the transrectal ultrasound. These cells are then studied under a microscope to check for cancer.

Have any Questions?
The accuracy and specificity of TRUS-guided biopsy is about 48%. It can go wrong in certain cases where the exact cancerous cells are not removed from the prostate.
A TRUS-guided biopsy can cause discomfort but isn’t painful.
MRI is less invasive than a biopsy, can be performed quickly, and leaves little or no scarring.
The patient will have a TRUS-guided biopsy under local anaesthesia. He can eat and drink normally before and after ther surgery. the patient can take his regular medicines as per schedule before the surgery unless ther doctor advises otherwise. If the patient is on any blood thinners or other medications that can cause problems in the surgery, he may have to stop taking those medicines before the biopsy.
The patient will be asked to clear hisr bowel before the transrectal ultrasound. An enema will be given 1-4 hours before the procedure to clean out the rectum and the colon. The patient will have to completely empty the r bladder before the procedure.
The patient may need about four to six weeks to recover after a prostate biopsy. The recovery depends on the patient’sr overall health and age. The patient can start with light activities 24-48 hours after the prostate biopsy.
