Transrectal Ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy is a needle biopsy procedure to detect the presence of cancer cells in the prostate gland. A special biopsy needle is inserted in the prostate gland through the walls of the rectum to remove small tissue samples for lab analysis. The surgeon removes these  samples from the prostate gland using the transrectal ultrasound. These cells are then studied under a microscope to check for cancer.

    How is TRUS-guided biopsy performed?

    Before surgery:

    • The patient will need to inform the surgeon about his ongoing medicines and allergies, if any.
    • The patient is asked about his medical conditions and any recent illnesses by the surgeon.
    • The patient is advised to stop taking blood thinners at least 7-10 days before the procedure.
    • The patient will have to start oral antibiotics before the procedure to prevent infection.
    • It is advised to eat light meals before the procedure.
    • The patient  needs to empty his bowel entirely with the help of an enema before the procedure.

    During surgery:

    • The patient will be given general anaesthesia and is made to lie on his left side with legs bent up towards the chest.
    • The doctor will give a digital rectal exam (DRE) to check for any other issues.
    • The urologist will insert the ultrasound scope into therectum.
    • With the guidance from the ultrasound images, the doctor will use a needle to take tissue samples from theprostate gland.
    • The process will be repeated multiple times to obtain as many tissue samples from different areas as possible.

    After surgery:

    • After the procedure, the patientwill be given a pad to wear to collect the residual blood from the rectum.
    • The patient is required to rest and drink something before leaving.
    • He is asked to drink plenty of fluids for the next 24 hours.
    • The patient will be kept under observation for 24 hours.
