Mastoidectomy surgery is a procedure to remove infected mastoid air cells located in the mastoid bone behind the ear. It is commonly performed to treat chronic ear infections that do not respond to antibiotics or other treatments. The surgery can help prevent further infections, improve hearing, and reduce ear discharge.
Types of Mastoidectomy
Simple Mastoidectomy
In a simple mastoidectomy procedure, the surgeon removes infected mastoid air cells through a small incision behind the ear. The middle ear structures are left intact. This procedure is typically used when the infection is confined to the mastoid bone and has not spread extensively.
Radical Mastoidectomy
Radical mastoidectomy is performed when the infection has spread extensively, involving not just the mastoid cells but also parts of the middle ear. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the mastoid air cells, some or all of the middle ear structures, and often the ear canal wall. This more extensive surgery is usually a last resort to eliminate severe infections.
Modified Radical Mastoidectomy
In this procedure, the infected mastoid air cells and some middle ear structures are removed, and the surgeon tries to preserve as much of the ear’s normal anatomy as possible. This approach balances effective infection control with maintaining hearing ability.
Preparation: Before surgery, it is important to inform the surgeon about any relevant medical history: bleeding disorder, past complications with anaesthesia, and any recent symptoms of upper respiratory infections such as a cold, flu, or fever within the week leading up to the procedure.
During the Procedure: General anaesthesia is administered to the patient to ensure a painless procedure. An incision is made behind the ear to access the mastoid bone. Using a bone drill, access is made into the middle ear cavity. The surgeon then removes the infected parts of the mastoid bone or ear tissue. The site of the incision is closed using stitches under stringent aseptic conditions, sometimes leaving a drain behind the ear to prevent fluid from collecting around the incision. Depending on the extent of the infection, the procedure may take between 2 and 3 hours.
Post-Procedure Care: Generally, it takes 3–7 days to recover after ear surgery. However, some patients may feel better in just a few days; it generally takes up to 14 days to recover.
