Hypospadias single-stage repair is a preferred treatment to hypospadias. In those with hypospadias, the urethra’s opening lies near the base of the penis rather than the tip.
Conditions such as genetics, pregnancy after 35 with obesity, fertility treatment involving hormone injection, etc., are linked to hypospadias in a child.
Few mild cases of hypospadias need no surgery. However, a child should typically undergo the hypospadias single-stage repair before two years of age if the urethra is under or above the penis or masked by the penis.
If untreated, hypospadias can affect erection, form a downward curve in the penis, and affect fertility in the latter stages of the child’s life. Since any medication cannot cure this condition, single-stage repairs aim at correcting the position of the urethra through minimally invasive surgeries.
The procedure starts with an intravenous fluid injection through the arm or legs and local or generalised anaesthesia — as the doctor deems fit. It makes the child feel relaxed and comfortable.
The child is under anaesthesia. The urologist performs the surgery to straighten the penis and reposition the urethra on the top of the penis.
The child is under anaesthesia, and he can go home on the same day. The doctor will prescribe painkillers and antibiotics (to avoid infection at the operated site) and ease post-op pain.
Call the doctor immediately if the following symptoms are noticed in the child after the surgery:

Have any Questions?
Doctors carry out the hypospadias surgery on patients under anaesthesia; therefore, it is typically not painful.
It may affect the size of the penis.
It may cause a little discomfort, but it will be easier than hypospadias.
Hypospadias is usually identified during birth. Medical professionals generally treat it by surgery within 6 to 12 months of birth and not beyond two years of age.
Check the corrected urethra for infection or leakage. Change the diaper regularly and cover the penis with waterproof tape while bathing your baby. Ensure the kid doesn’t straddle on hard toys for several weeks of the surgery.
Usually, after surgery, the parents are asked to use two diapers on the child to avoid getting an infection in the corrected urethra. The outer diaper will absorb the urine, and the inner one has to be changed every 3-4 hours or as soon as it is wet to keep the penis dry.
Do not leave the baby undiapered. Ensure the baby doesn’t catch an infection. Ensure the baby doesn’t play by straddling in the first few weeks of the surgery.
Hypospadias may need no surgery if it is very mild and doesn’t cause any discomfort in the patient.
