    Watchman Device Implant Overview

The Watchman Device is a parachute-shaped device that prevents blood clots formation in the left atrial appendage (LAA), located at the heart’s upper left chamber. This permanent procedure aims to prevent harmful blood clots from entering the bloodstream, potentially causing stroke. It is a one-time, minimally invasive procedure for non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients, offering an alternative to blood thinners. The device closes the left atrial appendage, a major source of blood clots in patients with AF (atrial fibrillation), reducing stroke risk and improving quality of life.

The Watchman device is a unique, proven alternative to warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation or abnormal heart beats. The Watchman device is suitable for individuals with atrial fibrillation not caused by heart valve issues, particularly those who need to avoid blood thinners due to risk factors like high blood pressure or stroke history, which increase the risk of severe bleeding. The watchman procedure involves an interventional cardiologist, an electrophysiologist, an interventional echocardiographer, and an anesthesia specialist working together.

    Watchman Device: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation: The cardiologist will provide specific instructions for the Watchman procedure, including the stoppage of certain medications like blood thinners. The team may also advise on dietary suggestions by midnight on the day of the Watchman surgery and make necessary assessments prior to the procedure. The Watchman Surgery typically lasts one hour, and is conducted in a cardiac catheterization lab.

During the procedure: The Watchman procedure requires general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort. The procedure starts with a small incision in the groin to insert the catheter through a blood vessel, with the use of imaging to guide the catheter. Then, the placement of the Watchman device in the left atrial appendage takes place, followed by the removal of the catheter and the closure of the insertion site.

After the procedure: Patients are typically monitored overnight in a hospital room, with nurses monitoring vital signs, insertion site, and leg circulation. Patients are advised to stay in bed for several hours as per their doctor’s instructions. After discharge, the doctor prescribes a medication regimen and provides instructions for recovery, ensuring the patient’s well-being.

Watchman procedure recovery: After the Watchman procedure, patients stay overnight at the hospital for monitoring and can resume activities within 24 to 48 hours, followed by discharge. After six weeks, patients are advised to avoid strenuous activities for at least one week and to stop the anticoagulation medications. However, a complete recovery may take weeks or months.

Post-procedure care: For a few days following catheter implantation, it’s common to have some little discomfort and bruises. Stay away from vigorous activities. Resuming regular activities will be advised by the doctor. In order to allow tissue to develop around the implant, expect blood thinners for 45 days. Appointments for follow-up are essential for medication modifications and monitoring.

The Watchman Implant is a permanent procedure for life; it is a one-time minimally invasive procedure in which the device is implanted into the heart, requiring no replacement and no visible external appearance.

Yes, the Watchman device is a one-time permanent procedure for cardiac patients.

No, the Watchman device is a surgical technique that implants a device through a tiny incision in the upper thigh using a narrow tube, just like a stent operation does.

Although both are implanted devices, a pacemaker treats irregular heart rhythms and the Watchman device focuses on preventing strokes.

The Watchman device is implanted into the left atrial appendage (LAA) of the heart to close off the LAA, a blind pouch of heart tissue, to prevent blood clots and stroke.

The Watchman device indications include atrial fibrillation, stroke risk due to the comorbidities, ineffective blood thinner therapy, and non-valvular atrial fibrillation (not due to heart valve problems).
