Transurethral resection of the prostate, commonly known as TURP is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary issues caused by an enlarged prostate, often due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Expansion of the prostate can cause pressure on the bladder and urethra, leading to symptoms like difficulty in peeing. The procedure involves a resectoscope being passed through the urethra, allowing the surgeon to remove extra prostate tissue blocking urine flow. TURP is an effective treatment for moderate to serious urinary problems in men, which persist despite medication.
The prostate gland, found in males, is located below the bladder and wraps around the urethra. Sometimes a TURP may also be necessary to treat symptoms without surgery, such as prostate cancer causing an inability to urinate. TURP can be performed as a standard TURP or as a laser TURP surgery based on the urologist’s recommendations.

TURP: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

The resectoscope releases fluid, transferring the tissue into the bladder, which is removed at the end of the operation.
After the procedure: Following TURP surgery, patients usually remain hospitalized for one to two days or may be discharged on the same day. A catheter is inserted into the urethra to facilitate urine flow and is typically removed by the healthcare provider before the patient is discharged.
Prostate TURP recovery time: TURP recovery typically takes four to six weeks, with laser TURP recovery time being considered faster and less uncomfortable than traditional TURP.
Post-procedure care: Follow healthcare provider’s advice on avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sexual activity until medical advice is given. Return to work after two to three weeks, get rest, drink fluids, and clean urinary catheter equipment as per the surgeon’s guidelines.
