Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) overview:

Transurethral resection of the prostate, commonly known as TURP is a surgical procedure used to treat urinary issues caused by an enlarged prostate, often due to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Expansion of the prostate can cause pressure on the bladder and urethra, leading to symptoms like difficulty in peeing. The procedure involves a resectoscope being passed through the urethra, allowing the surgeon to remove extra prostate tissue blocking urine flow. TURP is an effective treatment for moderate to serious urinary problems in men, which persist despite medication.

The prostate gland, found in males, is located below the bladder and wraps around the urethra. Sometimes a TURP may also be necessary to treat symptoms without surgery, such as prostate cancer causing an inability to urinate. TURP can be performed as a standard TURP or as a laser TURP surgery based on the urologist’s recommendations.

    TURP: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation: Before undergoing TURP surgery, patients typically receive either general or spinal anesthesia. It’s important for patients to abstain from eating and drinking for several hours before the procedure and to inform their healthcare provider about any medications or supplements they are taking. Once all necessary assessments are made, the surgeon proceeds with the procedure.

During the procedure: During the procedure, the resectoscope is inserted into the penis and passed through the urethra to the prostate area, allowing the surgeon to trim tissue from the inside without making external incisions. The resectoscope releases fluid, transferring the tissue into the bladder, which is removed at the end of the operation.

After the procedure: Following TURP surgery, patients usually remain hospitalized for one to two days or may be discharged on the same day. A catheter is inserted into the urethra to facilitate urine flow and is typically removed by the healthcare provider before the patient is discharged.

Prostate TURP recovery timeTURP recovery typically takes four to six weeks, with laser TURP recovery time being considered faster and less uncomfortable than traditional TURP.

Post-procedure care: Follow healthcare provider’s advice on avoiding heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sexual activity until medical advice is given. Return to work after two to three weeks, get rest, drink fluids, and clean urinary catheter equipment as per the surgeon’s guidelines.

    FAQ's

No, TURP is not a major surgery. It is generally categorized as a minimally invasive procedure as it does not involve any open incisions or cuts and also promotes quick recovery and less hospitalization.

TURP surgery pain is generally mild and improves over time. In the first few days, discomfort or burning sensations may occur during urination, which can be managed with prescribed medications.

TURP is often recommended for prostate enlargement patients who experience persistent symptoms and fail to respond to medication. TURP operation is suggested for the symptoms, including difficulty starting and stopping urine, weak urine flow, straining, frequent urine needs, nighttime awakenings, sudden urges, and an inability to fully empty the bladder.

The amount to be removed during the prostate surgery mainly depends on the size of the prostate and the severity of the condition. However, in most cases, the surgeon does not remove the entire prostate tissue but focuses on and removes the part that affects the individual in terms of the urine blockage and other associated urinary conditions.

After the procedure, the patient is usually advised to refrain from alcohol and coffee for the initial weeks to prevent an increase in urinary frequency, bladder irritation, and urgency, which makes the patient’s condition worse.

TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate) is a safe and effective procedure for treating moderate to severe symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) due to its high success rates and low risks.

No, TURP is typically painless due to anesthesia administration, but temporary discomfort and mild pain may occur post-surgery, which may resolve over time depending on medication usage.

TURP indications include enlarged prostate (BPH), urinary obstruction, and associated symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting urination, weak urine stream, incomplete bladder emptying, and urinary urgency.

TURP and prostate cancer are interrelated in a few ways. TURP is a surgical procedure that removes obstructive prostate tissue to alleviate symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, but it is not a treatment for prostate cancer.
