Thoracoscopic Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Before Surgery:

• The patient meets with the surgeon for a consultation to discuss the procedure, its risks, benefits, and alternatives. Reviewing the patient’s medical history and perform a physical examination.
• Depending on the patient’s medical history and the planned procedure, preoperative tests such as blood tests, chest X-ray, and electrocardiogram (ECG) may be ordered.

During the Surgery:

• Under general anesthesia, the patient is positioned for chest cavity access, and small incisions are made for a thoracoscope and surgical tools.
• The thoracoscope’s video feed allows the surgeon to conduct procedures such as lung biopsies, nodule removal, fluid drainage, or lung resections for cancer. Incisions are then sealed with sutures or adhesive strips.

Post-surgery:

• Initially, the patient may be on a liquid or soft diet to allow for healing. They gradually transition to a regular diet as tolerated.
• The patient is monitored for any signs of complications, such as bleeding, infection, or breathing problems
• Recovery from thoracoscopy varies by procedure type, with a hospital stay of a few days being common. Post-surgery pain is typically mild to moderate, and strenuous activities should be avoided for several weeks.
