RIRS surgery, also known as retrograde intrarenal surgery, is a minimally invasive technique used to extract kidney stones without making any incisions in the kidney. It involves making the urethra the pathway to the kidneys, using an optic endoscope to locate the stones, and then using a laser to reduce them to dust. This technique is commonly used for large or complex stones that lithotripsy cannot treat. RIRS treatment for kidney stones has high success rates and a low risk of complications. It requires a specialized urologist trained in RIRS to perform the procedure.

RIRS: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation: The preparation process involves a medical history evaluation, physical examination, and procedure details discussion. The patient undergoes assessment tests to confirm stone location. The procedure is typically performed under general, local, or spinal anesthesia.
During the procedure: The procedure involves placing a scope through the urethra, ureter, and bladder and moving it retrograde to intrarenal. Thereby, the doctor can see the stone, manipulate it with an ultrasound probe, evaporate it with a laser probe, or grab it with small forceps.
After the procedure: Following surgery, the patient will be monitored in a recovery room before being discharged home or transferred to a hospital room for an overnight stay. The catheter remains in place for 8-24 hours. Blood in urine may persist for 1-3 days, but should subside gradually. Antibiotics may be prescribed to reduce infection risk.
RIRS surgery recovery time: It is generally a one day procedure, so one can expect to go home on the same day after the procedure. After surgery, most individuals can resume normal activities within 4-6 weeks.
Post-procedure care: Some blood may appear in their urine for 1-2 weeks which can be managed by the instructed medications and diet with fluids or liquids. Avoid strenuous activity until cleared by your doctor, and follow the doctor’s instructions for stent care.
