What is this Pilonidal Sinus Surgery?
Pilonidal cyst surgery is performed by a dermatologist or a general physician on the sacs around the hair follicles in the lower back region at the tailbone to cure pilonidal cysts formed in the sacs. This surgery is recommended for patients who have reoccurring pain and swelling in the tailbone region, foul-smelling pus-like discharge, and painful lumps under the skin, which are common in mountain climbers and cyclists.
There are six types of surgeries performed:
Open Surgical Method:
- Wide Excision of Pilonidal Sinus
- Laser Pilonidoplasty (LPP)
- Excision with Primary Closure
Minimally Invasive Methods:
- Z-Plasty,
- Cleft Lift / Cleft Closure
- Pilonidal sinus flap surgery (Limberg or gluteal flap)

Pilonidal Sinus Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Pre-Surgical Preparations: The patients undergo various diagnostic tests and physical examinations, and the surgeon takes a thorough past medical history.
Procedure: An incision is made in the swelling, and the pus is drained out of the wound and stitched up to allow healing. To stop the pus from leaking, it is collected with packaging material. The sinus and the surrounding damaged tissue are removed through a diamond-shaped incision. Later, the wound is stitched up and allowed to heal.
Post-Surgical and Recovery Phase: The cyst could take up to 4 weeks to fully heal, and in the meantime, the surgeons perform wound dressing and then advise the patient to change the dressing every 2-3 days. Followed by the patient’s discharge as soon as the drain is removed. Whereas the complete recovery phase will be around 1-2 months.
