    Lobectomy surgery overview:

Lobectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing an entire lung lobe, commonly performed to address lung cancer, chronic infections, or congenital anomalies. It proves highly effective in treating both benign and malignant pulmonary conditions, especially in their early stages. Typically, the right lung consists of three lobes, while the left has two. Lobectomy is typically conducted during a thoracotomy procedure.

    Types of lobectomy Techniques

Lobectomy surgery is mainly categorized into two types, one is open and the other is minimally invasive. The size and location of the lung abnormality, the surgeon’s experience, and the patient’s overall condition basically play a role in the type of surgery to be employed.

    • Open lobectomy: In this type, a significant incision is made to remove a lung lobe. Minimally invasive lobectomy procedures include VATS lobectomy and RATS lobectomy.
    • Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS lobectomy): In this procedure, the surgeon makes small incisions on the side of your chest and uses a tiny camera to access and view the internal area.
    • Robotic-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS lobectomy): In this type, the surgeon operates robotic arms from a console positioned beside the patient. Three or four half-inch incisions are made between the ribs during the process.
    Procedure Name Lobectomy Surgery
Type of Surgery Open or minimally invasive
    Type of Anesthesia General Anesthesia
Procedure Duration Open: 2 to 3 hrsVATS or RATS: 1 to 2 hrs
Recovery Duration A few days of hospital stay followed by a few months of house rest to fully recover
    Lobectomy Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

    Preparation:

Before surgery, patients undergo assessments, breathing and blood tests, and a thorough physical examination to ensure they are fit for the procedure. They are then briefed on the open lobectomy, VATS, or RATS procedures before receiving general anesthesia.

During the procedure: Your surgeon will make an incision between your ribs to insert surgical instruments and a thoracoscope, a tiny camera. Another small incision is made to remove the specimen using a special bag. After rinsing the chest cavity and ensuring sufficient tissue removal, the incisions are closed.

After the procedure: After surgery, one or two drains will be placed in your chest to remove excess fluid and air. These drains will be removed once their output decreases. Your heart will be monitored for abnormal beats during your hospital stay. The day after surgery, you’ll be encouraged to walk with assistance. While an open procedure may require a week-long hospital stay, a minimally invasive procedure usually allows discharge within one to two days.

Recovery: The recovery might vary from person to person based on the extent of the surgery undergone, the patient’s age, and their overall health condition. In general, lung lobectomy recovery requires at least one month. But it could take a few weeks or even months until you feel fully recovered.

Post-operative care: Following the lobectomy, pain management, chest drainages, breathing exercises, and some mobilization activities should be performed in order to get a smooth recovery. Incision care, diet, and regular appointments should be maintained as instructed by the surgeon.

    FAQ's

A lobectomy, or removal of a lung lobe, is performed under general anesthesia using either a minimally invasive VATS or RATS technique or an open chest incision. After precisely identifying and isolating the desired lobe, the surgeon separates and closes blood arteries and airways before removing the lobe. The incision is closed, the chest cavity is emptied, and the remaining lung is inflated.

A robotic system is used by the surgeon to handle surgical instruments during a robotic lobectomy, which is a kind of VATS (video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) lobectomy. Even with robotic lobectomies, the procedure can still take one to three hours. Research suggests that skilled robotic surgeons could finish the surgery in 100–228 minutes.

In general, activities such as chair exercises, motion activities, walking, resistance bands, and breathing exercises with incentive spirometers are often advised by the surgeons to the patients in order to increase the lung capacities after the lobectomy surgery.

Yes, physical activity can aid in lobectomy healing significantly. Exercise is essential for enhancing lung function and general breathing efficiency. According to research, after lung cancer surgery, 30 minutes a day of gentle exercise can assist improve strength and lung function.

When a lung lobe is removed, the healthy lung portion of the lung lobe that is still left can grow and partially replace the lost lobe. To restore maximum lung function and breathing capacity, this lung expansion process is essential. The processes of diaphragmatic breathing, elastic recoil, and fluid resorption are the mechanisms involved in natural lung expansion.

Although the term “lobectomy” usually refers to the removal of a lobe, in human anatomy, it is mainly used in relation to two specific organs: the thyroid (thyroid lobectomy) and the lung (lung lobectomy).

Lobectomy surgery is indicated to treat conditions such as lung cancer, benign and malignant tumors, chronic bacterial infections, lung abscesses, fungal infections, congenital pulmonary anomalies, emphysema, etc.
