    Overview of a Latarjet Procedure

Latarjet surgery is the most common procedure used to treat shoulder instability, particularly when it is caused by bone loss or a bony defect in the shoulder joint. The procedure involves making an incision in the front of the shoulder and removing a piece of coracoid bone with the conjoined tendon (located at the front of the shoulder). During the surgical procedure, the coracoid bone is repositioned to the anterior aspect of the glenoid (socket) and secured in place using screws. This repositioned bone acts as a bone block, providing stability to the joint and preventing future dislocation. Additionally, the transferred muscles serve as a support strut, further enhancing joint stability. The conjoined tendon also plays a role in stabilizing the shoulder by acting as a sling during abduction and external rotation of the shoulder.

    Procedure Name Latarjet
    Type of Surgery Minor
    Type of Anesthesia General
Procedure Duration 45 minutes to 1hour
Recovery Duration 3-4days ( initial recovery)
    Latarjet: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

The first few weeks after surgery are focused on rest and gentle movement, and later a sling is advanced  to support the arm.  Physical therapy improves the range of motion and strength gradually, focusing on strengthening the shoulder muscles and restoring full range of motion. It may take up to six months or longer to fully recover and return to sports or heavy lifting.
