    Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT) Overview:

Endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) treats varicose saphenous veins in the leg. During laser EVLT treatment, a catheter is inserted into the vein through a small skin puncture. Heat is then applied to reduce varicose veins and swollen, bulging veins typically located on the thighs or calves, causing the vein wall to be destroyed.

This minimally invasive procedure aids in the regression of varicose veins and promotes blood flow through nearby veins. EVLT is effective, requires minimal downtime, and is commonly used to treat varicose veins caused by high blood pressure and various risk factors like hormonal changes and obesity.

    EVLT Procedure: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation: The preparation for EVLT of the saphenous vein involves a thorough history and physical examination, disclosure of medical conditions, restrictions on blood-thinners, and signing a consent form after understanding the procedure’s risks and benefits.

During the procedure:The procedure entails lying down while the doctor uses ultrasound guidance. Anesthesia is administered to the affected leg, followed by a small puncture in the vein. A catheter with a laser heat source is inserted into the vein, sealing it shut. Eventually, the vein shrinks and fades, enabling efficient blood circulation through healthy veins.

After the procedure: Endovenous laser ablation is an out-patient procedure that typically takes less than an hour. Post-surgery, monitoring will be conducted. The patient will be required to wear a compression stocking for a week after the procedure.

EVLT recovery: The procedure is an outpatient one, requiring no hospitalization, allowing the individual to resume normal activities and return to work within a day or two. A complete recovery might be seen in 2–3 weeks.

Post-procedure care: Postoperative care for endovenous laser therapy includes:

    • Usage of medications for pain and swelling in treated legs.
    • Application of ice packs for 10 minutes at a time for a few days to manage bruising, swelling, or pain.
    • Wearing compression stockings for a few days to weeks to prevent blood pooling or clotting.
    • Walk for 10 to 20 minutes three times a day for a couple of weeks, but avoid strenuous activities.
    • Avoid standing, sitting, or lying down for long periods.

    FAQ's

Yes, EVLT is a safe and effective treatment for varicose veins, caused by venous insufficiency.

EVLT is a procedure performed by a consultant vascular surgeon using local anesthesia, allowing the patient to remain awake, but the affected area will be numbed, although some patients may experience temporary prickling or burning followed by the surgery.

Laser for varicose veins (EVLT) significantly enhances quality of life, enabling active participation, with a remarkable 98% success rate, a remarkable achievement for most medical procedures. However, the success rate also depends on the surgeon’s experience and skills.

Normal activities can resume after 24 hours, except for strenuous activities that require two weeks, and patients typically experience minimal discomfort after wearing a compression stocking for two weeks.

Endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) is a safer, less invasive procedure compared to other surgical procedures, offering shorter recovery times, longer-lasting results, and minimal to no downtime. It’s an outpatient procedure, requiring no hospitalization, minimal pain, and fewer complications. The procedure requires only a small nick on the skin, requiring no stitches.

According to the studies, endovenous laser ablation is a procedure with a low recurrence rate of varicosity and minor complications.
