What is ERCP?
ERCP, or endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, utilizes a flexible tube and x-rays to address bile and pancreatic duct issues. Guided by a gastroenterologist, the scope navigates the digestive tract, with dye injected to enhance X-ray visualization. Usually conducted by skilled endoscopists in specialized centers, ERCP is seldom used for children. It may be outpatient or inpatient, contingent on complexity. ERCP aids in diagnosis, stone removal, stent placement, and treatment of pancreatic, bile duct, liver, and gallbladder conditions.

ERCP: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation: Before an ERCP test, the gastroenterologist will review risks and benefits with the patient, who must sign a consent form. Pre-surgery instructions include fasting, taking prescribed medications with water, and discontinuing certain medications as directed.
During the procedure: The ERCP procedure involves numbing the throat, inserting an endoscope, guiding it down the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, injecting contrast dye, using fluoroscopy, and checking for duct issues. Gastroenterologists also fix issues during procedures using tiny instruments, such as breaking up gallstones, removing tumors, dilating ducts, placing stents, repairing leaks, or performing sphincterotomies.
After the procedure: Following the procedure, one will spend an hour or two in the hospital while the anesthesia wears off, and may be discharged home. Patients may experience some groggy or spacey symptoms for the rest of the day following the ERCP surgery which will normalize over time.
ERCP recovery: ERCP recovery is typically quick, with most individuals returning home the same day after the procedure.
Post-procedure care: After the ERCP, the patient may experience a painful throat and swallowing difficulty for some time but can resume normal activities and diet unless instructed otherwise by the doctor.
