Heart Bypass Surgery
Heart Bypass Surgery is performed to divert the blood flow from a section of the blocked arteries in the heart. In this procedure, a part of an artery is taken from the leg, arm, or chest and is connected above and below the blocked portion of the vessel. Heart Bypass Surgery does not cure heart diseases. It is performed to mitigate the symptoms caused by myocardial ischemia, such as chest pain and breathlessness. Heart Bypass Surgery reduces the risk of mortality due to heart attack.
How is Heart Bypass Surgery performed: before, during and after.
Before undergoing the bypass surgery, you will be explained the procedure in detail. After taking consent, your medical history will be reviewed. You should not eat for at least 8 hours before the surgery. The hospital may perform a pre-operative screening test.
General anaesthesia will be administered before starting the bypass surgery. After securing the intravenous access and putting a catheter to drain the bladder, an incision is made in the leg or arm to remove a small portion of the vein to prepare a graft. Next, an incision is made on the chest to place the graft.
After the bypass surgery is completed, you will be shifted to an intensive care unit to monitor your blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate.
You may have to stay in the hospital for many days before getting discharged. Therefore, you should adhere to your follow-up visits with your doctor.
