Buccal Fat Removal Surgery overview:
Buccal fat surgery, or cheek fat removal procedure, is one of the cosmetic procedures that is being performed in individuals with unsatisfied facial contours, such as their rounded face due to excess fat in their lower cheeks, & so are willing to have a more desirable shape of the face with a sharp jawline. These individuals must be healthy, with stable weight, and have reasonable expectations about their surgery.
The common surgical approaches for buccal fat surgery include the intraoral approach (common, safe, & with no visible scar method) or the facial approach, otherwise called a facelift procedure, an external approach. Minimal incision surgery, microcannula, or sometimes laser techniques can be employed for cheek reduction or buccal fat removal.
We at Yashoda offer buccal fat removal through a facelift procedure, also known as rhytidectomy, which is a cosmetic surgery that lifts and tightens the facial tissues. It involves removing excess skin, smoothing wrinkles, and tightening the facial tissues to make the face look youthful.

Buccal Fat Removal Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care
Preparation: Before the buccal fat surgery, stop using medications such as blood thinners, any herbal supplements, & NSAIDs, as advised by your physician. The surgeon further evaluates your skin elasticity & the amount of buccal fat present in your cheeks through facial analysis to perform an individualized treatment plan. Try avoiding certain habits, such as smoking & drinking alcohol, as they interfere with surgery.
During the Procedure: Once in the procedure room, you will be administered local or general anesthesia. The excess fat in the buccal region is removed by making incisions inside the mouth on the inner portion of the cheeks to access the buccal fat pad while applying pressure on the outside of the cheeks, making its exposure easy. The incision is then closed with dissolvable stitches.
Recovery: After surgery, the patient can return home the same day. During the recovery process, you may experience symptoms like numbness, pain, and swelling in the cheeks & mouth, which will gradually subside after a few days or may take weeks. The individual can return to their work after a week or so. However, a complete recovery can take up to 6 weeks.
Post-Procedure Care:
- Follow dietary recommendations, such as preferring a liquid diet for the first week, & switch to soft foods gradually.
- Take pain medications as prescribed by your doctor.
- Brush your teeth gently without applying much pressure, as it hurts your cheeks.
- Sleep with your head elevated, using the pillows that help reduce facial swelling.
- Avoid strenuous activities at least for 2 weeks.
- Attend follow-up appointments for monitoring.
