    Bentall Procedure Overview

The Bentall De Bono Surgery is performed to treat ascending aorta dysfunction and aortic valve dysfunction in patients with aortic root abnormalities. Bentall and De Bono gave the initial description of it in 1968. Usually, the procedure was developed to treat aortic root aneurysm patients. It was then changed in a few different ways.

The primary goal of the Bentall Surgery is aortic root replacement, which is done by inserting a mechanical valve conduit. Although it requires long-term anticoagulation and has the potential to be a long-term treatment, Aortic dissection and rupture can occur spontaneously as a result of aortic root dilatation, irrespective of whether aortic valve insufficiency is present. The application of the Bentall Operation and its various methods yields beneficial results; in addition, life expectancy has significantly grown over the last 30 years since its introduction.

Bentall De Bono Surgery: Pre-Op & Post-Op Care

Preparation: To assess your medical history and make sure your health supports the surgical treatment, a few assessments, blood tests, and a comprehensive physical examination are performed before the procedure.

During the procedure: After administering general anesthesia, an incision is made down the middle of the chest to remove the diseased aortic valves. Coronary arteries and a portion of the aortic wall are dissected. The ends of the aorta are then sutured to an artificial graft with a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve.

After the procedure: Usually, the entire Bentall de bono operation process takes less than five hours to complete. Following the Bentall operation, post-operative instructions and precautions, ongoing support, and keen monitoring are done by a healthcare team in order to attain optimal recovery.

Recovery: The bentall Surgery recovery time might vary from person to person based on the extent of the surgery undergone, the patient’s age, and their overall health condition. On average, the Bentall procedure recovery time might be around six to twelve weeks, however, it might take a few months for some people.

Post-operative care: Avoid strenuous exercise for up to 12 weeks and refrain from lifting heavy objects initially. Gradually increase activity as tolerated after surgery.

    FAQ's

One cannot assess the exact life expectancy of the individuals who underwent the Bentall procedure. However, the life expectancy after the Bentall de bono Surgery mainly depends on factors such as underlying medical conditions, age, severity, surgery success rate, and lifestyle factors.

The modified bentall procedure allows for the implantation of ostial “buttons” that are subsequently linked to the graft, whereas the bentall technique involves the direct reimplantation of the coronary arteries.

Bentall surgery is usually a safe procedure, although it might have some possible risks, such as bleeding, abnormal heart rhythms, and some cognitive impairments.

Most patients who have aortic root procedures have success with valve-sparing root replacement (VSRR) and aortic root replacement (ARR), commonly referred to as the Bentall surgery. 86 to 90 percent of patients do not require another surgery after the procedure. But for patients with Marfan syndrome, there is an increased chance of reoperation.

For pathologies involving the aortic valve and the sinuses of Valsalva, the Bentall operation has been accepted as the gold standard of surgical technique. The pathologic valve can be replaced with either a mechanical or bioprosthetic valve.

The bentall surgery is indicated to treat conditions such as aortic regurgitation (a condition where the leakage of the aortic valve takes place), Marfan’s syndrome (a genetic abnormality that results in aortic wall weakness), aortic dissection (division of the aortic wall’s layers), and aortic aneurysm (aortic enlargement).
