The surgical gastroenterology team at Yashoda Hospitals has the expertise in performing various types of surgeries including major GI surgeries as well as laser surgeries:
- Oesophagectomy: It is the surgical removal of a part of the entire esophagus.
- Gastrectomy: It refers to the removal of the stomach. When only a part of the stomach is removed, it is known as a partial gastrectomy. When the entire stomach is removed, it is known as a full gastrectomy.
- Intestinal Resection: It is a surgery to remove any part of the intestine including the small intestine, large intestine, or rectum.
- Colectomy: It is the surgical removal of either a part of or the whole colon.
- Cholecystectomy: It refers to the removal of the gallbladder, an organ that collects and stores bile.
- CBD Exploration: It is a procedure to examine if the flow of bile is being blocked by a stone while flowing from the liver and gallbladder to the intestine.
- Hepatico-Jejunostomy: It is a surgical procedure in which communication between the hepatic duct and jejunum is created.
- Total Proctocolectomy: It is a surgical procedure in which the colon, rectum, and anus are removed from the patient’s body. It is performed in patients suffering from ulcerative colitis and familial adenomatous polyposis.
- Shunt & Devascularization Surgeries: These are surgeries aimed at disrupting the esophagogastric collateral circulation.
- Ileal Pouch Anal Anastomosis: It is a surgical procedure to restore gastrointestinal continuity after the colon and rectum have been removed surgically. It is performed in patients suffering from diseases such as pancreatic resections, ulcerative colitis, Whipple’s procedure.
- Biliary Strictures Surgeries: It is a surgery aimed at removing the strictures present in the bile duct that obstruct the flow of bile to the intestine.
- Other Surgeries: Performed for the treatment of acute/ chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.
The range of laparoscopic surgeries performed by the department for GI diseases include:
- Laparoscopic Appendicectomy: It is a minimally invasive surgery to remove the appendix by making several small incisions around it.
- Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy
- Laparoscopic CBD Exploration
- Laparoscopic Anti-reflux Surgery: Performed for the treatment of hiatus hernia.
- Laparoscopic Adhesiolysis: It is a minimally invasive procedure to remove the adhesions present within the tract.
- Laparoscopic Hernia Repair: Including inguinal, incisional, and diaphragmatic surgeries.
- Laparoscopic Rectopexy: Performed for rectal prolapse
- Laparoscopic Vagotomy: It is a minimally invasive surgery to remove some of the vagal nerves from the body.
- Laparoscopic Cardiomyotomy: It is a surgery performed for the correction of achalasia cardia.
- Laparoscopic Assisted Colectomy: It is a minimally invasive surgery performed for the treatment of benign and malignant tumors present in the bowel.

- Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery: Performed for weight loss. Four subtypes of surgeries- laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB), laparoscopic gastric sleeve resection (LGSR), and Roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB).
