SRT Stereotactic Radiotherapy

1. What is stereotactic radiotherapy?

Stereotactic radiotherapy or SRT is a form of Radiotherapy. It offers radiotherapy from different angles around the body. The waves from the beam meet at the tumor. This concentrated form of the rays ensures a high radiation dose at the site of the tumor. The surrounding tissues, on the other hand, receive a low amount of radiation. Thus, risks in the surrounding areas are reduced while opting for the SRT.

2. What are stereotactic radiotherapy side effects?

The side effects of stereotactic radiotherapy are temporary. The main complications include tiredness and fatigue. It occurs for a couple of weeks after the surgery. The other side effects are nausea, vomiting, headache, etc., due to the swelling in the brain or nearby areas. Anti-inflammatory medications can treat these like corticosteroids. The other complications include red or irritated sites in hair and scalp and loss of hair.

3. How much does stereotactic radiation therapy cost?

The cost of stereotactic radiation therapy depends on the part of the body being administered with the radiation like the brain, lungs and others. The average cost of stereotactic radiation therapy ranges from INR 30,000 to INR 20,00,000, depending on the type of therapy and the sessions. The internal and external radiation therapies are further significant factors that decide the total costs of this treatment.

4. What is the difference between stereotactic radiotherapy and radiosurgery?

Stereotactic radiotherapy or SRT and radiosurgery both treat cancer tumors that may be present in any part of the body. Both therapies concentrate on the tumor and eliminate damages to surrounding healthy tissues. Thus, the main difference lies between the intensity of the radiation and the duration of the therapy. Radiosurgery delivers high-intensity radiations, while radiotherapy administers low-intensity radiations. Further, radiosurgery is administered to the head and neck only.
