    FAQ’s

What is a combined heart-lung transplant?
A combined Heart-Lung transplantation is a rare and major surgical procedure which is performed for patients with diseased heart and lungs. During this procedure, a person’s diseased heart and lungs are replaced with that of a recently deceased (dead) donor. This procedure aims to extend or improve the quality of life for candidates suitable for the organ transplants.
    How common are heart-lung transplants?
The fact is that the availability of suitable donors is very limited and medical intervention remains essential for the treatment of many patients. This means that a successful donation can only go forward if the donor and recipient are in relative geographic proximity.
    Why is heart-lung transplant necessary?
Heart and lungs coordinate with each other and healthcare professionals generally use the term ‘Cardiothoracic’ to describe this close association. While the heart and lungs work together to pump oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body, our body’s cells use this oxygen for energy. The oxygen-poor blood is then pumped back to the lungs and this process commences again.
Can an individual get a heart and lung transplant at the same time?
A heart-lung transplantation is a major surgery performed to replace a person’s diseased heart and lungs with those of a donor. It is offered to individuals with both heart and lung failure when all the other treatment options fail.
What are the contraindications of heart-lung transplant?

Absolute contraindications for a heart-lung transplant include:

    • Age over 65 years with other serious health condition
    • Blood poisoning (septicaemia)
    • Having an incurable form of cancer
    • Over alcohol or drug consumption
    • Smoking
    • Having a mental health condition, such as schizophrenia

Relative contraindications for a heart-lung transplant include:

    • Having HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C
    • Being obese
    • Having severe diabetes that has caused damage to the organs, or having severe osteoporosis
What are the risks following a heart-lung transplant?

One of the biggest risks after having a heart-lung transplant is that the body will reject the new heart and lungs despite taking immunosuppressants.

There are two types of organ  rejection:

    • Acute rejection – rejection after the surgery
    • Chronic rejection – rejection occurs within months or years after the surgery
