Yashoda Hospitals’ National Conference & Live Workshop on the Most Advanced and Robotic “Pancreatic Surgeries”
Yashoda Hospitals successfully conducted the National Conference and Live Workshop on the most advanced and robotic “pancreatic surgeries” with the participation of 500+ surgical gastroenterologists from all over India.
Hyderabad, March 12th, 2023: 500+ surgical gastroenterologists from all across India attended Yashoda Hospitals’ National Conference and Live Workshop on the most advanced and robotic “pancreatic surgeries,” which was a great success. The pancreas is one of the most important and crucial organs in the human digestive system. The pancreatic diseases are varied, complex, widespread, and very difficult to manage. Most pancreatic diseases and cancers require surgery. Surgery for the pancreas is the most complex of the surgeries one can perform on the human body. Only highly experienced, skilled, and dedicated surgeons perform the surgeries on the organ. Minimally invasive approaches like laparoscopy and, most recently, robotic surgeries for pancreatic cancer and other pancreatic diseases are the latest available treatments.
“Every year, almost 1.4 million people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Unfortunately, for most of those people, the disease is diagnosed too late to be cured. Less than 10% of people live five years following a diagnosis. Identification of risk factors and methods to either reduce or eliminate the factors play an important role in the prevention of cancer. Lifestyle factors such as tobacco smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, obesity, and physical inactivity pose a higher risk for pancreatic cancer. Tobacco smoking as the cause contributes substantially to the high mortality rates in pancreatic cancer. Among non-modifiable risk factors, men over 50 years of age have an elevated risk,” Dr. Pavan Gorukanti, Director, Yashoda Hospitals, said on the occasion.
“Pancreatic disorders are complex syndromes that result from many etiologies. There has been a rising trend of pancreatic disorders across India. Problems with the pancreas can lead to many health concerns, such as acute pancreatitis, chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic cysts, and cystic fibrosis. It is reported that the southern states of India have the highest incidences of acute pancreatitis, ranging from 200 out of every 100,000 people. Alcohol and gallstones were the most common etiological factors of acute pancreatitis. Pancreatic cancer is a rare cancer and is ranked 4th in incidence and 7th in mortality in the world. By 2030, it may become the second leading site in terms of mortality. India is no exception to this phenomenon, and variations have been observed in different regions, with the northeast showing higher rates,” said Dr. Vijaykumar Bada.
Yashoda Hospitals’ senior surgical gastroenterologist, minimal access and robotic surgeon, Dr. Vijaykumar Bada, is well known for performing advanced GI surgeries for cancer and complex pancreatic surgeries by laparoscopic and advanced robotic techniques regularly. Yashoda Hospital in Hitech City has the latest generation of robotic systems. There are many young surgeons who are interested in performing pancreatic surgeries and in understanding the various complexities involved in major pancreatic surgeries. Lack of exposure, expertise, technology, and knowledge of pancreatic diseases and surgeries makes many surgeons shy away from undertaking pancreatic surgeries. In this regard, the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology and Robotic Sciences at Yashoda Hospital in Hitech City, in association with the Indian Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgeons Association (IHPBA), organized a national conference on pancreatic surgeries—an update on March 11 and 12, 2023. IHPBA is the national association of all surgeons who specialize in liver, pancreas, and biliary surgery in India.
The conference included a live surgical workshop on both days where several pancreatic surgeries were performed by robotic, laparoscopic, and open techniques and were telecast live to a 500+ surgeon audience. There was live interaction with the operating surgeons and the audience at large, where all the surgeons understood, learned, and clarified the various complexities involved in pancreatic surgeries. The conference also included didactic lectures and the latest updates in the field of pancreatic surgery. Controversial areas of pancreatic surgery were debated by eminent surgeons from across the country.
The conference was attended by more than 500 practicing surgeons. There were around 20 eminent national faculty members in the field of pancreas from across the country. This was the first of its kind conference in Hyderabad, where the complete spectrum of pancreatic diseases were discussed and all types of pancreatic surgeries were performed live using the most advanced technology. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. G. S. Rao, Managing Director, and Dr. Pavan Gorukanti, Director, Yashoda Hospitals.
