Rosuvastatin: Frequently Asked Questions Answered

What Is Rosuvastatin?

Rosuvastatin is an oral medication to combat lipid disorders and prevent cardiovascular disease.
Rosuvastatin belongs to the category of statins. These belong to the class of medications known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors. Rosuvastatin, like most statins, works by decreasing the pace of production of cholesterol in the body. As a result, this will reduce the amount of cholesterol that may accumulate on the walls of the arteries. Cholesterol build-up in the arteries is known as atherosclerosis. This accumulation of cholesterol can narrow down the lumen of the blood vessels. This can block blood flow to other body parts, including vital organs such as the heart and brain.

What Are The Uses Of Rosuvastatin?

The primary use of Rosuvastatin is to decrease the cholesterol in the blood. This is achieved by reducing bad cholesterol in the blood, also known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL). In addition to this, Rosuvastatin also increases good cholesterol high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Rosuvastatin has a depleting effect on triglycerides too.
This medicine is ideal in conjunction with dietary changes, weight reduction, and exercise.
It is also a cardioprotective drug used to protect the heart from atherosclerosis and other fatty substances in the blood.
Rosuvastatin may be used in children and teenagers in the 8 to 17 years range. Especially those who have familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia.

    Frequently Asked Questions about Rosuvastatin

There is no limit on how long one can take Rosuvastatin. Research suggests that long-term treatment is beneficial. As long as there are no symptoms that bother you or no severe side effects, Rosuvastatin can be continued.

Rosuvastatin is not a medicine that qualifies as a blood thinner. It decreases the cholesterol content in the blood – or in lay terms, the fat content in the blood. It prevents the build-up of this fat in the blood and prevents it from accumulating in the blood vessels. This ensures the free flow of the blood. Rosuvastatin is not a blood thinner.

Rosuvastatin is a long-acting statin. It has a half-life of up to 19 hours. It acts better if taken in the morning as the body processes it throughout the day. It is also equally efficacious when taken in the evening.

The levels of Rosuvastatin in the blood reach their peak within three to five hours of swallowing the tablet. This does not mean Rosuvastatin has started working. It takes a minimum of 7 to 15 days for the drug to show effects in your body. Even then, it would take 4 to 6 weeks to see any noticeable difference in your cholesterol lab tests.

Rosuvastatin, like other statins, has a mild-to-moderate impact in decreasing blood pressure. Long-term use of Rosuvastatin suggests a decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The exact mechanism of this is unknown.

There is no direct, intentional effect of Rosuvastatin as a drug towards weight loss. There has been, however, an unexplained side-effect of Rosuvastatin that can cause weight loss. In case of severe weight loss, it is advisable to consult a doctor at the earliest.

Rosuvastatin decreases the bad cholesterol in the bloodstream. Vitamin D needs fat for absorption in the body. Rosuvastatin does not lower good cholesterol or essential fats. Hence, there is no direct interaction when taking Vitamin D with Rosuvastatin. The two medicines, by themselves, do not cause any harm.

Per the latest research, there is no harm to the kidneys by Rosuvastatin. As a medicine, it does not act on the kidneys directly or indirectly. Prolonged use of Rosuvastatin has shown improvement in renal functions and glomerular filtration rate.

If the previous lipid profile reports indicate that the overall blood cholesterol levels are in check, such a scenario can be considered. In cases with a minimal dosage of Rosuvastatin required, alternate day medication has shown a similar effect as a daily dosage.

In most cases, this will cause no harm to your abdomen. If the dosage of Rosuvastatin is on the higher side, then two tablets together can cause severe abdominal pain. The abdominal pain may be associated with vomiting. It is advisable to consult a doctor as soon as possible. As far as possible, Rosuvastatin should be consumed at the same time every day.
