What Is Flagyl?

Flagyl is a prescription antibiotic and antiprotozoal medication used to treat symptoms of infections caused by bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, skin, joints, respiratory tract, and vagina. Flagyl is a brand name for Metronidazole. It helps treat trichomoniasis (sexually transmitted disease), amoebiasis (amoebic dysentery), and giardiasis (intestinal infection causing cramps).

What Are The Uses Of Flagyl?

Flagyl is either combined with other antibiotics or taken as a single drug to treat diseases such as endocarditis, bacterial vaginosis, and pelvic inflammatory diseases caused by bacterial or protozoan infections. It’s used for treating amoebic dysentery, malaria, trichomoniasis, and giardiasis.

    Amoxicillin and Flagyl are combined as a therapeutic medication for periodontal diseases and in scaling and root planing. The combination increases antibiotic resistance in the oral cavity and improves clinical healing during scaling and root planing of the teeth and periodontium under the gingiva (otherwise known as gums).

    In mild to moderate Clostridium difficile-associated diseases (CDAD), patients respond within 4-6 days when administered with Flagyl. Flagyl (500mg) is taken three times daily for 10-14 days.

    Flagyl and Doxycycline help in countering bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract and urinary system as antibiotic medications. They also treat infections of the skin. These medications are effective in their fields, though not much is known of their combined effects.
