What Is Aleve?

Aleve is an effective over-the-counter (OTC) painkiller. It provides temporary relief from pain and reduces fever caused by different health conditions. Aleve contains the active ingredient naproxen sodium and is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It works by reducing the production of prostaglandin chemicals. Prostaglandins cause inflammation, pain, and fever in the body.

    What Are The Side Effects Of Aleve?

    Aleve can cause common side effects such as stomach pain, nausea, heartburn, dizziness, and lightheadedness. It can cause severe allergic reactions, stomach bleeding, heart attack, stroke, liver and kidney problems in rare cases. 

    Contact your doctor immediately if you have:

    • trouble breathing, hives, swelling on face or throat 
    • chest pain, shortness of breath  
    • bloody stools, red-colored vomit
    • severe abdominal pain 
    • dark brown urine, yellowing of eyes and skin
    • little or no urinating, and difficult urination
