Enlarged Heart
What Is An Enlarged Heart?
Enlarged heart refers to a medical condition in which the dimensions of a person’s heart are larger than usual. Medically, this condition is known as cardiomegaly.
An enlarged heart may result from a variety of causes, such as hypertension or ischemic heart disease (or atherosclerosis). It can also result from valvular diseases, past heart attacks, thyroid diseases, or genetic predispositions.
The increased size of the heart may make it difficult for blood to be pumped throughout the body. This can lead to symptoms of weakness, dizziness and fatigue. The person also experiences edema in the feet and legs. Shortness of breath after some physical activity is also a sign. Other signs such as heart palpitations, fainting and chest pain warrant examination for an enlarged heart.
