What is Osteopenia?

Osteopenia is a condition in which an individual’s bones are weaker than normal, but do not break easily like osteoporosis. It occurs when the body is unable to make a new bone fast enough as old bone reabsorbs.

    What are the causes of Osteopenia?

    Osteopenia is caused due to certain underlying factors such as:

    • Eating disorders
    • Positive family history of this osteopenia, genetic disorders
    • Decreased levels of hormones such as estrogen or testosterone
    • Untreated celiac disease
    • An overactive thyroid gland
    • Chemotherapy
    • Certain medications such as antiepileptics and corticosteroids
    • Inappropriate levels of calcium and vitamin D in the body
    • Not enough exercise
    • Excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol
    • Other conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
