    How is Congenital Muscular Torticollis prevented?

    There are no preventive measures that one can take to prevent the development of this condition in infants. However, it is always suggested that pregnant women should take the utmost care during their pregnancy.

    What is the treatment for Congenital Muscular Torticollis?

    • Gentle stretching: It is done to allow adequate stretching of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Exercises include turning the infant’s neck side to side to touch the chin to each shoulder and mildly tilting the head to bring the ear present on the unaffected side to the shoulder. These exercises are repeated several times during the day. It is also recommended to allow the infant to naturally turn their head to the other side, for instance, by placing toys there. Another important activity is to lay the infant on their stomach for small amounts of time to help in strengthening the neck muscles.
    • Surgery: It is done when nonsurgical methods are ineffective. In this procedure, the length of the sternocleidomastoid muscle is increased. Surgeries are preferred for children when they reach preschool years.
