What is Compartment Syndrome?

Compartment syndrome is a condition wherein the compartments of the body usually, legs or arms are unable to receive sufficient blood supply due to an injury. It is a potentially dangerous condition that is caused due to excessive pressure build-up from swelling of tissues or internal bleeding post-injury in the affected area. Depending on the type of injury, it can be acute or chronic.

    What are the causes of Compartment Syndrome?

    There are various acute as well as chronic causes of compartment syndrome such as:

    • Crush injuries that may have occurred in the past
    • Burns to the affected areas
    • Tight bandaging over an injury
    • Prolonged compression of the compartment
    • Blood vessels surgery of the arms or legs
    • Blood clot formation
    • Extremely vigorous exercise causing strain on the legs and arms
