What are the symptoms of Paget’s disease of bone?

Most people who suffer from this condition are asymptomatic. However, when symptoms do appear, they may present themselves as:

  • Pain in the hip joint
  • In the skull, bone growth may result in headaches and loss of hearing
  • If the spine is affected, then pain and tingling sensation is common
  • It may put excess pressure on the leg joints, which may cause osteoarthritis.

This condition may occur in only one to two areas of the body, or it may affect the whole body. Hence, the symptoms that appear will depend on the area of the body that is affected.

What are the complications of Paget’s disease of bone?

This condition usually progresses slowly in the body. However, it may cause certain complications such as:

  • Bones may fracture very easily.
  • Deformed bones may lead to excess bleeding during surgeries.
  • It may also cause bow legs.
  • Osteoarthritis: Irregular bone may increase the pressure on joints that can cause osteoarthritis.
  • Neurologic problems: When this condition affects the spine or skull, it may compress or damage the nerves causing pain, tingling sensation, etc.
  • Heart failure: It may lead to forcing the heart to pump more blood to the affected areas eventually leading to heart failure.
  • Bone cancer is a rare complication.
