What is the treatment for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis?

The treatment strategies for this condition are:

  • Physical therapy: Mild exercises are recommended for the patients suffering from this condition to ensure the stretching and strengthening of the lumbar spine and to ensure its stability.
  • Medications: Pain relief medications are prescribed and also epidural injections may be prescribed to reduce the swelling.
  • Decompressive laminectomy: It is a surgical procedure in which the roof of the vertebrae is opened to create more space for the spine. It may be done with or without spinal fusion which is a procedure in which a few vertebrae are fused to initiate the formation of a single bone.
  • Laminotomy: It is also a procedure to create an opening in the lamina in an attempt to relieve the pressure on the nerve roots.
  • Foraminotomy: It is the surgical opening or enlargement of the bony exit of the nerve root as it leaves the spinal canal.
  • Medial facetectomy: It is the surgical procedure to remove a part of the facet which may have overgrown, or to create more space in the spinal canal.
  • Anterior lumbar interbody fusion: It is a procedure in which the degenerative disk is removed through the lower abdomen. Devices such as metal or carbon filters are placed to support the removed disk and are packed with bone to ultimately fuse it
    with other bones.
  • Posterior lumbar interbody fusion: It is a procedure in which the degenerative disk is removed through the back, the rest of the method is similar to an anterior lumbar interbody fusion.
  • Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: In this method, the degenerative disk is removed through the back, and the posterior bone of the spinal canal is also removed followed by the use of a structural device to allow the fusion of bones.
  • Posterolateral fusion: It is a procedure that places bone graft on the back as well as side of the spine followed by fusion.
