What is Limb Length Discrepancy?

Limb length discrepancy (LLD) is a condition wherein the lengths of the arms or legs are different and are of noticeably unequal lengths. These may or may not affect the functioning of arms, and sometimes do need treatment.

What are the causes of Limb Length Discrepancy?

This condition may be congenital or acquired at a later period in life because of certain diseases. Such as;

  • Bone infections, tumors hinder bone growth
  • Bone diseases that cause deformities
  • Neurofibromatosis: It is a genetic disorder which results in the formation of tumors
  • Multiple hereditary exostoses
  • Ollier disease: It is a condition wherein benign tumors are formed around the bones
  • Neurologic conditions
  • Juvenile arthritis: inflammation of the synovium observed in children under the ages of 16
  • Exposure to radiation
  • Fractures and other traumatic injuries may also cause LLD
  • It may also be idiopathic in some other conditions.
