What is Hyperparathyroidism?

It is a condition in which the parathyroid glands become excessively active resulting in increased levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the blood. This leads to increased levels of calcium in the bloodstream, in a condition called hypercalcemia.

What are the causes of Hyperparathyroidism?

This condition is caused due to factors that increase the production of PTH. Some of these factors are:

• Severe calcium and phosphorus deficiency in the body
• Vitamin D deficiency
• Chronic kidney failure

This condition can be divided into two types depending on the cause:

• Primary hyperthyroidism: It is a condition in which there is a problem in the functioning of parathyroid glands such as adenoma, hyperplasia, malignant tumor due to which secretion of PTH increases.
• Secondary hyperthyroidism: It occurs due to another condition such as inappropriate levels of calcium and vitamin D in the body.
