What is Hip Bursitis?

Trochanteric bursitis, commonly known as hip bursitis is a condition of inflammation of the bursa present on the outer region of the hip (greater trochanter) or upper legs, which results in excessive pain in the affected hip or thigh. It is a type of chronic hip pain.

What are the causes of Hip Bursitis?

Several factors can lead to the development of this condition, some of these are:

  • Excess stress on the hip over a prolonged period
  • Repeated overuse of the hip
  • Rheumatoid arthritis, gout, pseudogout or other conditions
  • Direct injury to the hip.
  • Infection with bacteria or other microbes
  • Diabetes
  • Uneven length of legs
  • Bone spurs over the hip
  • Problems associated with the spine such as scoliosis
