What are the symptoms of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

DVT condition can sometimes be asymptomatic. However, the first symptom a patient may experience is usually a cramp-like sensation in the affected area. Other symptoms may include:

  • Swelling, pain, redness of the affected muscle
  • Warmth to the touch
  • Worsening of the pain when moving that muscle
  • Discoloration and prominence of the vein due to blood clot
  • Tenderness of the affected area 
  • Fever is sometimes associated with this condition

What are the risk factors of Deep vein thrombosis

Certain factors may predispose an individual to developing this condition, some of these are:

  • Inheriting a blood-clotting disorder
  • Prolonged bed rest
  • Injury or surgery
  • Pregnancy
  • Birth control pills
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Smoking
  • Cancer
  • Heart failure
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Geriatric population
  • Sitting for long periods, limited movement of muscles

What are the complications of Deep Vein Thrombosis?

It is important to consult a doctor right away if an individual experiences any of the above symptoms. If not, it may cause certain complications like:

  • Sudden shortness of breath
  • Chest pain 
  • Feeling lightheaded or dizzy
  • Rapid pulse
  • Coughing up blood
