What is Congenital Muscular Torticollis?

Congenital muscular torticollis, also known as twisted neck or wry neck, is a condition in infants, in which they tilt their head to one side and experience a difficulty in turning the head to the other side. It occurs when the sternocleidomastoid muscle which extends down the side of the neck is shortened and tighter than normal

This condition is usually present at birth or in some cases, develops soon after.

What are the causes of Congenital Muscular Torticollis?

Even though the exact cause of this condition is not known, some of the suspected causes of it are:

  • Abnormal position in the womb
  • Injury to the neck muscle before birth
  • Tighter space in the uterus is most common in firstborn children
