Complex Regional Pain Syndrome Treatment

Even though this condition cannot be treated completely, there are a few strategies used for the management of the Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. These are:

  • Pain relievers: Administration of pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc to ease mild pain and control the inflammation on doctors advice.
  • Antidepressants and anticonvulsants: Prescribed medication are employed for the pain that arises from a damaged nerve.
  • Corticosteroids: The use of steroid medications may help in reducing the inflammation and improving the mobility of the limb.
  • Bone-loss medications: Doctor recommended medication to prevent bone loss.
  • Sympathetic nerve-blocking medication: Use of anesthetics to block the pain fibers of the affected nerves.
  • Intravenous ketamine: Ketamine in low doses is used to alleviate pain associated with CRPS.
  • Heat therapy: It is done to relieve the swelling.
  • Topical analgesics: Topical creams or patches are usually preferred to reduce the hypersensitivity reaction.
  • Physical or occupational therapy: Gentle exercises of the affected limbs helps in decreasing the pain.
  • Mirror therapy: The patient is asked to sit before a mirror and move the healthy limb to trick the brain into thinking that it is the limb affected by CRPS.
  • Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS): Use of electrical impulses at the nerve endings.
  • Spinal cord stimulation: Small electrodes are placed along the spinal cord and the resulting electric current relieves the pain.
  • Intrathecal drug pumps: Pain-relieving drugs are pumped into the spinal cord fluid.
  • Acupuncture: Thin needles are used to stimulate the nerves.
