What is the treatment for Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy?

The primary treatment of this condition is to allow the decompression of the spinal cord.

Some of the treatment strategies used for this condition are:

  • Medications: Use of pain relief medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen etc.
  • Physical therapy: It is recommended to patients to allow mild exercises that do not strain the spine. Wearing braces is also suggested for a small period of time to prevent excessive movement and straining of the spine.
  • Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion: It is a surgical procedure in which the damaged intervertebral disc is removed to allow spine stability. It is usually performed with other procedures such as fusion and fixation to ensure the stability of the spine.
  • Anterior cervical corpectomy: It is a procedure similar to discectomy but is more extensive in the removal of the damaged, arthritis vertebrae and intervertebral disc that compress the spinal cord and nerves. It is only preferred as the method of treatment when discectomy is not of much use.
  • Cervical laminectomy: It is a surgical procedure to remove the bone covering the spinal cord in the neck.
  • Cervical laminoplasty: It is a surgical procedure in which the spinal canal is enlarged. Lamina is a section of the bone forming the roof of the spinal canal so this technique props that roof a little open by creating a hinge on one side of the lamina and using bone strut or a small metallic plate on the other side.
