What is Bowed Legs?

Bowed Legs (or bow leggedness), more commonly known as genu varum, is a condition wherein the knees are curved outward and the ankles touch each other even when a person is standing with his/her knees and ankles together.

What are the causes of Bowed Legs?

Common causes of this condition include:

  • Rickets: Due to vitamin D deficiency for a prolonged period, the bones start weakening causing bowed legs
  • Blount disease: This is a condition wherein the development of a child’s shin happens inappropriately. Hence, when the child starts walking, it results in the worsening of the bowed legs
  • Paget’s disease: It is a metabolic condition that harms the bone break down and rebuilding process. 
  • Dwarfism: Achondroplasia is the type of dwarfism, which causes bowed legs over a prolonged period. 
  • Bone fractures, also known as bone dysplasia
  • Abnormally developed bones
  • Lead, fluoride poisoning
