what is SGPT Test?

The Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase test, also known as the SGPT test, is performed to identify the level of Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase (GPT) in the bloodstream. GPT is an enzyme that is produced by different types of cells in your body. The cells that are known to produce the most amount of GPT are the heart, kidney, liver, and muscle cells. However, this test is most frequently used to keep a check on the health condition of your liver. It is a painless test with no side effects other than the momentary pain of a pinprick when the doctor draws blood from the arm.

What are SGPT test uses?

The SGPT blood test is typically used to detect any kind of disease or injury to the heart, kidney, liver, or any particular muscle group. However, this test is most frequently used to detect any problems with the liver. A doctor will most likely prescribe this test at regular intervals for liver patients.

What is the normal range of SGPT/ALT?

SGPT, also known as Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) Test, has a definite normal range. The range of results considered normal in an SGPT test is between 7 and 56 units per litre. Anything above that means an organ that produces SGPT enzyme is most likely damaged, and treatment needs to be done at the earliest.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The test results of an SGPT test are in units per litre. Therefore, when looking at your results, you should know how many units of SGPT per litre is considered healthy and how much is considered abnormal. If you see that your SGPT level is within the range of 7 to 56 units per litre, you need not worry.

If you have previously suffered or are still suffering from any liver ailment like Hepatitis A, B, and C, then the SGPT test is important. Even if you have never suffered a liver ailment before, it is advisable to get this test done at least twice a year to monitor the state of your liver.

During your ALT or SGPT test, a doctor or nurse will draw a sample of blood from a vein in your arm. This blood sample is taken to a diagnostic lab where expert technicians analyse the units of SGPT present in your blood sample. You can get your test results within 48 hours.

Anything beyond 56 units per litre is considered abnormal. However, if your test results show that your SGPT levels have risen beyond 65, then this could be deemed as alarming levels of SGPT.

In lab results, SGPT means Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase, an enzyme that is produced usually by the heart and liver cells. The test is performed in a diagnostic lab and used to determine the levels of this enzyme that can be found in the blood serum.

There is no such physical discomfort if your SGPT levels are momentarily high. Nevertheless, it is a cause of concern because higher SGPT levels in the blood indicate underlying liver diseases like liver cirrhosis or viral infections like Hepatitis. However, cholesterol medication like statin can also increase SGPT levels in your blood serum.

The normal range for SGPT/ALT levels in the blood is anywhere between 29 and 33 units per litre for males. The same for females is considered to be from 19 to 25 units per litre. However, SGPT levels up to 55 units per litre are also deemed within the safe range for both males and females.

If your SGPT test results show an SGPT level of 42, then you are on the higher side of the SGPT range spectrum. Although this does not indicate any alarming injury or other issues with your heart or liver, it could warrant further investigation. Hence, it is advisable to book an appointment to be completely sure.

If the SGPT levels in your liver blood test are greater than 56 units/litre, it may indicate liver injury or damage. High SGPT causes may include cholecystitis, hepatitis, obesity, alcohol, and drug abuse, among others. Symptoms of high SGPT may include weakness, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs, jaundice, excessive bleeding, and bruising.

SGPT serves as an important biomarker in determining the health of your liver. It is critical to maintain normal SGPT levels for your liver to function properly. Certain lifestyle changes, such as maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough vitamin D, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and alcohol, can help improve liver function and lower the enzyme levels.
