What is CSF Test?

You may need a CSF test if you experience the following symptoms:

1.Infections in brain or spinal cord:

• Severe headache
• Double vision
• Changes in behaviour
• Stiff neck
• Nausea and vomiting
• Sensitivity to light

2. Autoimmune disorder, such as multiple sclerosis (MS):

• Bladder control problems
• Muscle spasms
• Weak muscles
• Dizziness

A procedure called Spinal Tap or Lumbar Puncture is done to collect your Cerebral Spinal Fluid. The procedure is usually done at the hospital. This includes the following steps:

• First, your doctor asks you to lie flat or on your side.
• Your health care expert cleans your back and inject an anaesthetic so that you don't feel pain during the process.
• Once the area is completely numb, the professional inserts a thin, hollow needle between the two vertebrates( bones that make up the spine) of your lower spine. 
• He collects some amount of cerebrospinal fluid for examination. But you need to stay still while the professional collects the sample as it may lead to a risk of bleeding.
• After the sample is collected, you will be advised to lie straight on your back.
• Your sample is then sent to the laboratory for testing.

After the test is complete, it is sent to the laboratory for examination. Your doctor will ask you to lie flat for one hour after the lumbar puncture or spinal tap. You may develop a headache after the spinal tap. Your doctor may advise you to drink caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, or soda if it happens.

The CSF test may detect the following:

1. Infections of brain or spinal cord such as

• Encephalitis
• Meningitis
• West Nile virus
• Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE) 
• Tuberculosis.

2. Autoimmune disorders such as

• Multiple sclerosis
• Guillain-Barre syndrome 
• Sarcoidosis.

3. Bleeding in the brain
4. Brain tumours

CSF leaks can be caused by an injury, an epidural, surgery, a spinal tap or a tumour. Many CSF heal on their own, but those don't require surgical repair.

The CSF test is an easy, quick and effective series of tests done to find the serious conditions or diseases that develop in your brain or spinal cord. The whole procedure takes between five minutes to one hour.

Your health care expert will guide you through the preparations before the test. However, it is generally advised to empty your bladder and bowels before the test.

CSF test may have the following risks involved:

• People who are given blood thinners may bleed
• An infection at the puncture site
• A headache after the test
• Discomfort during and after the procedure
• An allergic reaction to the anaesthetic.
