What is an ABG Test?
The Arterial Blood Gas or ABG test analyses the quantity of blood gases, mainly oxygen and carbon dioxide, in the bloodstream. It measures the partial pressure of the blood oxygen and CO2, as well as the oxygen saturation and the bicarbonate level in the blood.
As the blood circulates throughout the body, blood carries oxygen from the lungs to cells and carbon dioxide out of the lungs. The ABG test determines whether the lung is functioning well and the pH balance of the blood is maintained.
Imbalances in these functions can help in the diagnosis of different medical conditions, such as the following:
- Kidney failure
- Cardiac disorders
- Diabetes
- Drug overdose
- Asthma
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary disease
- Shock
The blood is collected from an artery, and the result is generally available within 20 minutes.
