What is an ANC Profile?

ANC lab tests are carried out to assess the health of a pregnant mother and her child. The first trimester of pregnancy is a crucial phase. This phase requires the utmost care and precaution. The ANC tests are carried out during the first trimester to ensure that the pregnant mother and the baby are safe. The test assesses the health of the mother and her baby through a thorough evaluation. Antenatal tests are the most important tests recommended by doctors these days. These tests screen infectious diseases such as HIV, syphilis, and Hepatitis B, as such health conditions might get transmitted from the mother to the child in the womb.

    Frequently Asked Questions

The primary focus of the ANC profile is to check if the pregnant mother has a disease that might interfere with the normal development and growth of the fetus. Through the test, doctors identify the pregnant mother’s issues and prescribe medications accordingly.

Your ANC profile will include CBC that helps doctors understand whether you have anemia. Your profile will also contain a blood group and RH factor, which will help understand whether the child will be susceptible to Hemolytic diseases. Apart from these parameters, it will involve blood sugar count, urine R/M, Hemoglobin electrophoresis, VDRL, HIV1 & 2, and HBsAg to determine other conditions that might affect the fetus.

If you are someone in the first trimester of pregnancy, your doctor might suggest you get your ANC profile checked. Your doctor might also order the ANC profile if he/she suspects you have a high risk of infectious disorders, thyroid disease, or Diabetes Mellitus during pregnancy.

An ANC profile test is similar to a blood test. A lab technician will collect your blood sample from the upper arm through a needle along with your urine sample. Both samples will then be taken to a lab, where technicians will determine the risks and issues you might have.

The ANC profile test helps doctors understand the issues a mother has and how it may affect the health of the child in her womb. The tests in the ANC profile include urine routine and microscopy, complete blood count, glucose (fasting), HIV 1 & 2 antibody, blood grouping, hepatitis Bs (surface) antigen, hemoglobin HPLC, and rapid plasma regain.

If your ANC drops below 1000, it might mean you may face issues in your pregnancy. It is nothing to worry about, as these tests will help your doctor understand the risks in your pregnancy and prescribe medicines accordingly. However, if the ANC drops below 500, you have a greater risk of infection, and you must be very careful during pregnancy.

The ANC profile test includes glucose or blood sugar tests where you must fast. It also includes a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT), where you will have to fast and not eat or drink anything overnight. Fasting is an important part of this test, or you might end up getting the wrong results.

If your ANC levels in the blood tests are high, that could mean you have an infection in your body, or you are under severe stress. This can lead to a serious condition, and if not treated for weeks, it can become life-threatening.

The ANC tests are not compulsory. However, if your doctor suggests it, you must get these tests done. It helps monitor the pregnant mother and her child’s health. Along with routine medical check-ups and diagnostic scans, these tests are also an essential part of pregnancy healthcare.

There are absolutely no risks related to the ANC profile tests. Getting these tests will be good for you and your child. Through these tests, you will understand the risks your child might face. Thus, it will help you take preventive measures for safety.
