When to seek medical help for dengue fever?

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne tropical disease that has the potential to develop into a severe, life-threatening condition. It can be mistaken for the flu or another viral infection in the initial stages. Thus, you should consult your doctor if you experience the following dengue fever symptoms:

    • Sudden onset of high fever
    • Nausea
    • Skin rash
    • Pain behind the eyes
    • Joint pain
    • Fatigue

    Diagnosing dengue fever

An accurate diagnosis can be delayed for patients since the symptoms of dengue fever are similar to those of other viral infections, such as typhoid fever and malaria. The doctor may request the patient’s medical and travel history. A few blood tests can also be done in order to confirm the suspicion. However, the results might often come too late in order to begin treatment on time.

    Dengue fever treatment

There is no specific dengue treatment that can be followed. It varies based on the individual’s medical condition; whether it is mild or severe.

For milder cases of dengue fever, the doctor may recommend:

    • Increased intake of fluids to prevent dehydration
    • Painkillers to lower the fever and reduce pain.

If the case develops into a severe one, then the following steps may be followed:

    • Hospitalization to closely monitor the patient’s symptoms and treat them.
    • Intravenous (IV) fluids if the patient is unable to take fluids through mouth.
    • Blood transfusions if a person’s platelet count is less than 10,000, and he has active bleeding.
