Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) Surgery at Yashoda Hospitals

Athletes and women frequently wearing high heels are at a higher risk of experiencing a ligament tear. The Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is crucial in the knee, connecting the tibia (shin bone) and the femur (thigh bone). When this ligament is torn or sprained, it results in an ACL injury.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to restore knee stability and function by repairing or reconstructing the damaged ACL. During the procedure, a tissue graft replaces the torn ligament, often using a tendon from another part of the knee. This minimally invasive surgery involves small incisions around the knee joint and is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.

At Yashoda Hospitals in Hyderabad, our highly skilled orthopedic surgeons have extensive experience in successfully treating ACL injuries, ensuring patients receive top-tier care and a smooth recovery.

What’s the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery cost in India?

Depending on the various factors, such as type of surgery, type of graft, duration of hospital stay, expertise of the surgeon, etc., the cost of ACL surgery can vary from Rs. 95,000 to Rs. 2,80,000. It costs approximately Rs. 2,50,000

ACL Injuries:

Approximately 50% of all anterior cruciate ligament injuries coexist with harm to the knee’s meniscus, articular cartilage, or other ligaments.

  • Grade One: In a Grade 1 sprain, the ACL is slightly stretched but not torn, representing mild damage to the ligament fibers. Therefore, the knee’s stability is still supported.
  • Grade two: In a Grade 2 sprain, the ligament is stretched until it becomes loose, and it is frequently called a partial ligament tear. The stability of the knee is slightly disturbed, with associated symptoms such as pain and swelling.
  • Grade Three: In a Grade 3 sprain, a ligament has been ripped in two or torn straight off the bone. This makes the knee significantly unstable and leads to difficulty in walking. The term “complete tear of the ligament” is most frequently used to describe this kind of sprain.

Who Needs ACL Surgery:

  • Individuals with knee instability (whose knees frequently give out during everyday activities)
  • High-performance athletes who need stability and want to return to their game.
  • People with physically demanding jobs who want to regain knee strength for an active lifestyle.
  • Individuals with associated knee injuries, like a torn meniscus, may benefit from ACL repair or trimming.
  • If symptoms persist despite physical therapy and other treatments, surgery may be the next step.

Factors Affecting the Cost of ACL Surgery:

  • Expertise of the surgeon.
  • Type of graft used.
  • Type of the hospital.
  • The severity of the injury.
  • Pre- & postoperative costs.
  • Type of Surgery.
  • Follow-up costs.

Types of ACL Surgeries:

There are two main types of procedures for ACL injuries, i.e., ACL reconstruction & ACL repair.

ACL Reconstruction (single bundle):Single Bundle ACL Reconstruction Surgery involves the removal of the damaged ligament from the knee & inserting graft tissue (autograft/allograft), taken from tendons in and around the knee, to restore its function. Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, which only requires a few little incisions around the knee, is a less invasive option to open knee surgery. During this procedure, to obtain a clear image of the torn ACL, your doctor will insert a camera and other tiny tools. The graft will be then held in place by the two tunnels they draw. To prevent harm to your joint, you will need to wear the brace.

Autograft:ACL Reconstruction involves the creation of new ligaments from the patient’s body tissue, such as patellar tendon autografts, hamstring tendon autografts (tendons from the back of the thigh), and the quadriceps tendon above the kneecap. In contrast to this, in allograft ACL surgery, the tissue is taken from a cadaver.

Compared to its traditional equivalent, arthroscopic ACL restoration is safer and superior since it involves fewer incisions and causes less tissue damage. It also recovers fairly quickly.

Double-Bundle ACL: The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is surgically replaced with two smaller grafts as opposed to one larger graft in a double-bundle restoration. In this procedure, the graft material is passed through three tiny “portals” (5 mm incisions) and a tiny incision (1/2 inch) in the shin bone.

Primary ACL Repair:Primary ACL repair is considered to be one of the surgical procedures for ACL tear. During this procedure, donor grafts are not being used, & the ACL’s torn ends are cautiously aligned, sutured together, and trimmed to eliminate any frayed or damaged tissue.

Post-operative Care:Rehabilitation therapies post-surgery play a vital role in the healing journey of ACL surgeries.

FAQ's

While both ACL repair and reconstruction are surgical procedures used to treat ACL tears, they take different approaches to the injured ligament. ACL repair includes mending the existing damaged ligament, whereas ACL reconstruction is replacing the damaged ligament with a graft.

The main signs your ACL Repair is healing well enough include reduced knee pain & swelling, no significant stiffness in the knee, allowing normal movements, & meeting the rehabilitation milestones such as Walking without crutches, etc.

Without surgery, an ACL tear—especially a complete tear—cannot heal naturally, as individuals with ACL injuries lack proper blood flow. Non-surgical therapies such as physical therapy & bracing may help in cases of partial tears; however, individuals with complete tears surely need surgery for complete recovery & stability.

It often takes nine months or more to fully recover from surgery, including physical therapy and the initial phases of recovery. To avoid re-injury, it’s crucial to wait until your ACL restoration has fully healed before getting back into sports.

While ACL surgical reconstruction is generally recommended for younger patients who are more active, PRP injections may be better for older patients for improving knee health. Nevertheless, these injections also help individuals with post-ACL reconstruction by enhancing the recovery process.

Rest, ice, & gentle exercises are the first steps in the Acl Protocol with a hamstring graft. Over several months, strength training and functional activities are added. The complete recovery time span may range from 6 months to 12 months.

Like any other surgery, knee surgery involves a few minor risks, such as infection, blood clots, knee discomfort, & stiffness.

You may begin with a few exercises, such as quad sets, hip flexion exercises, and heel slides, following an ACL injury. Other exercises include hip abduction exercises, glute sets, bridging, shallow standing knee bends, & heel lifts, which can be performed as your symptoms subside & in case you can support your weight.
