Bilateral Varicose Vein Stripping Surgery

The surgery performed to remove varicose veins in the legs is called vein stripping. These veins are swollen, enlarged, twisted and can be observed under the skin. The varicose veins appear in blue or red colour, and they mostly appear in the legs and can develop in other body parts. Varicose vein stripping is used to tie or remove a large vein in the leg known as the superficial saphenous vein.

How is Bilateral Varicose Vein Stripping performed: before, during and after

Before surgery:  Vein stripping normally takes 60-90 minutes. The patient may receive the following:

  • General anaesthesia: Under this anaesthesia, one will not feel any pain and will fall asleep.
  • Spinal anaesthesia: This will make the lower half of the body numb and relaxed.

During surgery: The surgical procedure includes two to three minor incisions in the leg around the damaged vein. A thin plastic wire is inserted in the vein through the incision present in the groin and is guided towards the cut farther down in the leg. The wire is then tied to the vein and pulled out through the lower cut resulting in removal of the vein.

After surgery: Post-procedure, the surgeon will close the open incisions with stitches and the patient is required to wear compression stockings and bandages on the leg after the procedure for around 2 to 6 weeks. Seek for doctor’s advice on other lifestyle changes.
